Why do I say no to the candy at the movies? Why do I record my calories? Why do I eat clean unprocessed foods? Why do I exercise every day? WHY?
I found myself asking these questions as I was exercising today while my daughter was at a dance rehearsal. Note here, you will never find me sitting in my car waiting for her rehearsals to be finished. I physically can not sit and wait, knowing I could be doing something active. I know to some that might sound ridiculous, but to me sitting in the car is unproductive, when I could be getting in my own activity. This was not always my attitude.
16 years ago, before I had children, I was what I call a “casual exerciser” meaning that I’d exercise a few weeks and then motivation would wane and I’d stop. After having my son, 16 years ago, I made huge changes in my lifestyle. I exercised 4 to 5 times a week and joined WW. I lost over 100 pounds in 2 years and maintained it for several years, even becoming a WW Coach for 14 years. My son would watch me do my Tae-Bo (yes, it’s still a favorite) videos and even join in sometimes when he was a toddler. He grew up watching me eat healthy and exercise, but also knew this made his mom happy. Four years later I had my daughter and she too grew up exercising with me, and both cheered me on at races as running became a huge part of my life.
Fast forward to today at the track. I think about the fact that I’m almost 45 years old and I now eat a clean diet, no chemicals or additives, exercise 6 to 7 days a week, and I'm an AADP Board Certified Health Coach and own my own Health Coach practice. My son is now 16, a varsity athlete who prides himself on fueling his body correctly and working out so he is at the top of his game and my daughter is a competitive dancer and trains 6 to 7 days a week.
